Yes, I will admit I spit my gum out in the parking lot the other day.....
and its been haunting me since, honestly it has.
I FEEL GUILTY ....
SO
I researched how bad is spitting your gum out for the environment and here is what I found.
First, most of the research and concern for spitting your gum out is coming from the UK, specifically London, England.

- Britain's chewing gum crisis has grown dramatically in recent years. Gum is now one of the nation's most popular forms of confectionery and consumption has jumped 7 per cent in the past three years. As a result, a rash of gum blobs has spread across cities and towns. A recent clean-up of Oxford Street in London resulted in 300,000 lumps being removed.
- Every year, 935 million packs of gum are chewed by 28 million Britons

Additionally, I found out that it is illegal to buy and sell chewing gum in Singapore. Altough, it is not illegal to chew it or give it as a gift! WEIRD right?
Well, the reasoning for the ban on gum was because citizens of Singapore were sticking gum under tables, chairs ect. and it is not good for the environment and the country as a whole!

Soo to sum up is gum spitting bad for the environment....
From reasearching I finding that the gum directly is not quite bad, but rather it is the fact that they gum sticks to surfaces and takes a VERY long time to biodegrade, therefore costly cities, a large amount to remove it in order to keep a clean and fresh environment! Nobody wants that sticky stuff all over right... Here is another link with great information about the sticky situation... some of the facts and link below!
Chewing gum is a worldwide problem and is costing businesses and taxpayers millions of dollars a year to clean up?Soo to sum up is gum spitting bad for the environment....

FACTS:
1. Annually, there is over 650,000 metric tons of chewing gum produced (2005 statistic) every year. It is predicted that in the next 5 years, over 1 million metric tones of chewing gum will be produced.
2. There are over 374 trillion sticks of chewing gum made every year (not including bubble gum balls/chiclets.
3. Did you know that 374 trillions sticks of gum stacked on top of each other is approximately 2,305,800 miles high.
4. Next to cigarette butts chewing gum is the second largest littering item in the world!
5. The average person chews over 300 pieces of chewing gum a year. Bacteria/Germs: Scientists know of 1,600 species of bacteria. Bacteria are all around and can be caught through coughs, sneezes, dirty hands, contaminated foods, chewed chewing gum and a sick person’s body fluids.
MORAL of the STORY.... Stick happens... but dont be one (like me) who contributes... think twice next time that gum has lost its flavor!!!
Interesting post! I hate when people stick their gum under tables and such.. but I wouldn't want it to be illegal. I wonder if people do like gum deals and sell it illegally.. haha
ReplyDeleteHaha Autumn.... you crack me up...but seriously I dont know!:)
ReplyDeleteLove this post Abbey! I remember hearing about that concoction the British scientists came up with last year and it made me laugh. :) But I guess it really is annoying to be walking down the street and get gum stuck to your shoe...who knew gum was such a huge problem??
ReplyDeleteooh this is such an interesting topic!!
ReplyDeleteI think we are ALL guilty of this situation! I love information like this, really SINGAPORE? Wow, at least they are doing something for the environment!
Thanks for this Abbey! :)

ReplyDeleteOh Abbey leave it up to you to do a post on chewing gum! But I do love it and I do have to say I am a big gum chewer and I spit it out all the time too!! OPPS!! I had no idea it is so bad for the environment but now I do...so thanks for the great post!!
ReplyDeleteHaha! Abbs I love it. Actually I was wondering if gum was bio-degradable...I can't believe it's actually illegal?? Great post!
ReplyDeleteAbbey you are always so creative!
ReplyDeleteThat was so crazy to read about. I had a hard time putting myself in the shoes of those people who cleaned up Oxford St. and removed 300,000 blobs of gum. ish.
Well, now I know if I ever go to Singapore, I will need to refrain from taking part in illegal gum exchange! --S
