My thoughts for the last two weeks!
Well well well....reflecting over the past two weeks all I can think about is advocacy and how intimidated I was at the beginning of this new project... I will be honest when I heard the word advocacy I immediately related it with "strange" people who picket, yell, and show anger because they are show passionate about a particular topic, and as I understand it is a responsibility of a healthy educator i was very turned off by the false stereotype I had in my mind. Therefore, I was a little reluctant to be interested in the advocacy project. As we learned about the subject in class through PowerPoint and lecture....I soon relaized the streotype I had created in my hease was not nessicarily depictive of what advocacy really means! Being an advocate for health is much different, and I honestly feel that just being a health educator we are advocating daily for healthy behavoirs etc. that will lead to an overall high quality of life for indiviuals.... moral of the story I WAS WRONG, and now I see advocating as something nessicary... maybe not in the sense of picketing and protesting (still don't get that) but in the idea that we are selling health and we want the indivuals who represent our city, counties, states, country (money and power people) to jump on the bandwagon and sell health.... without it what are we really....? Next. this leads to the topic of wealth = health another topic we covered in class over the last two weeks, I know I said as health educators we are selling health.... but, can wealthy really buy health... this is a hot topic in health education and according to the videos and class dicussions we have had.... all signs point to yes, the idea that wealthy indivuals in our society are able to buy more healthful food choice, choose living environments that are safe and condusive to outdoor physical activities, pay for better health care, and simply have health insurance puts the wealthy at an advantage for an overall higher quality of healty! Okay okay enough from me! Needless to say I have has my eyes opened the last two weeks and really enjoyed learning about health vs wealth and advocacy.... even though I didnt stay awake during the whole movie! :(

Abbey- You're funny. Way to leave this post off with "even though I didn't stay awake during the whole movie!" I guess sometimes, nature calls and you gotta take a nap!??
ReplyDeleteI was on the same boat as you were regarding advocacy. I thought to myself, "heck no, I'm not going to picket at the capitol if my life depends on it!", but now I see that there is so much more to advocacy.
Good reflection! See you Tuesday! --S
Abbey-
ReplyDeleteI liked your point about how health educators sell health. I never thought about it in that way, but it's so true! I also liked how you ended your post with saying you didn't stay awake through the whole movie.. haha! This was actually one of the first documentaries that I didn't want to sleep through! Good reflection!

ReplyDeleteHaha, nice post Abbey! I found myself laughing throughout your whole post. I really like how you admit to your misunderstanding of "advocacy" and how you dealt with it. I also really like your points about how wealth really does equal health. Great job!
ReplyDeleteGood reflection, Abbey! How did I miss that sleeping thing? :) At least you weren't snoring!
