I was very interested in reading about this topic, where our food comes from because I was raised in Northern North Dakota where farms are abundant. I grew up with a Grandfather who ran a fertilizer plant for a living and farming was a way of life for majority of our small community. I will be honestly when I remember playing out in the front yard as a child and seeing fertilizer "spray planes" or "cropdusters" fly over town, and parents talk about being out a children when the planes would be spraying right near their homes! Non - related to the article but related to the subject matter, the number or deaths due to cancer are extremely high in our area, there is currently research being done to see if there is a correlation between the pesticides used on farms and the presence of cancer. The findings currently are very inconclusive, but the research is being done.
Therefore, reading the statistics on pesticides, and how the have a negative impact on the environment, I have provided links above about how the environment directly affects individual living within or under specific conditions.
The following facts about pesticides really struck me:
- Fertilizer plants pollute the air with acids, ammonia, and other greenhouse gases.
- Pesticides that kill weeds may also kill helpful insects and plants.
- In 2001, 181 pounds of pesticides - over one third of all pesticides were used in farming were applied to feed grains, hay, and pastures.
- Excessive use of animal manure as fertilizer can pollute waterways with nutrients that cause algal blooms and bacteria that are harmful to human health.
- Huge Cattle feedlots foul with smelly and harmful gases that pollute water with run-off from manure.
- Manure lagoons and industrial scale hog farms have broken open in storms polluting waterways and killing fish.

ReplyDeleteVery interesting post, I never knew most of the facts that you stated in your blog. Thanks for the heads up!
Abbey- I didn't realize you grew up in a farming town. I hope that if there is a link between cancer and pesticides, researchers can come up with some ways to reverse the effects. That is so scary to think about!!
ReplyDeleteI think that you did a very nice review of this activity. I chose to analyze my diet, and I still understood everything that this website presented to you.
One thing that came to mind while reading this post: how much better off would our world be if we just had small family farms with no chemicals allowed? Seriously, lets bring it back to the old days where everyone had a house, a fence, and 15 cows... --S
Hey Abbey!
ReplyDeleteWow, first of all I'm glad you chose to do the tour because I think you were the only one in our group to do something different, so props to you! Second, some of those facts are crazy! Who knew algal blooms could be caused by manure and nutrients in waterways?! Also, it's good to know that research is being done on the correlation between cancer and pesticides. Hopefully we get some knew insight out of it! Well I really enjoyed reading your post Abbey, seeya in class!
Good job Abbey! Once again a great post...these facts are crazy! How nice would it be if there were no pesticides involved in farming? Your facts about pesticides were really interesting! Thanks for always making your posts fun!
ReplyDeleteAbbey great post!! this one really rocked it!! I like how you do your research and share it with us...keep up the great work!! there should be an award for best researcher!!
