Reading Review: Reading Number 30

UNITED STATES SILENT WAR:

"A new coordinating body is essential to the success of nonindigenous species prevention and management efforts."

WHAT DO YOU THINK???

Reading number 30 from out text, titled
"Needed:A National Center for Biological Invasions" written by don C. Schmitz, Danial Simberloff from "Issues in Science and Technology, Summer 2001.

SUMMARIZE: The authors of this article summarize recent issues facing the US in regards to biological invasive species/organisms . The article talks about the how "the introduction of invasive organisms are on the the largest threats to native species population and have caused more than 130 billion dollars a year in damage to the environment." This is a problem that is very difficult, because we as a nation do not have a clear plan or guidelines set out for how to handle the issue properly. The reading elaborates on this idea, it aimed its focus at the need for a "National Center for Biological Invasions" because there are "At least 20 federal agencies have rules and regulations governing the research, use, prevention, and control of non indigenous species; several hundred state agencies have similar respnosibilities." There are people, organizations, counties, states, feredral agencies all working to help slove the problem, but do you feel this would be more confusing for individuals? In 1999 President Clintion created the "National Incasice Species Council, and the council has developed some information and guidlines to follow but has not has taken control of the problem like most had hoped. There were no clearly stated ways in which the council was to interact and regulate issues between federal agencies and state, local goverenments therefore the problem still exsists, and the authors are calling for a "Nation Center for Biological Invasions" to settle all issues begin to work on lessening the debt created by the problem at hand.

WEBSITE ONE FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF THE CENTER: This website is for the foundation of a nation center for biological invasion, and states some simple steps the US should follow to help solve the issue of biological invasion.

WEBSITE TWO AGAINST THE ORGANZATION OF THE CENTER:
This website specifically speaks against, the 1999 development of the council by President Clinton, to create a body that works against biological invasion. It gives a person another point of view, are the invasive species really that bad?

HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION: Who would you turn to for information on this topic, do you think we need to spend our countires money on a "National Center for Biological Invasion"?

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT: The book specifically details how people in Duluth have had an issue with ruffe fish, in the Lake Superior Harbor (page 125 of the text). Lets' say you know of an individual in Duluth who is releasing "ruffe, a small perchlike fish from southern Europe that have become the most abundant fish species in Duluth/Superior Harbor" who would you turn to for guidelines on what to do to stop invasive organisms and individual releasing these fish?

  1. Will you please provide the names and links to the websites you mention? That might help us be able to answer your question better.

  2. Abbey-The answer to your question I think would be that you would just go to the DNR and report the person...that is what their job is to do. But like Dr. V said I think you might have forgot to link your sites...

  4. Hey abbey! I agree with Ingrid in that you should go to the DNR or the Coast Guard with this information. My gosh! invasive organisms cost over 130 billion dollars in damage? wow. thats a lot of damage. I have never even heard of this. Very interesting post. Thanks!

  5. It is surprising to me to learn that a single organism can cause so much damage, especially in an area that we are all calling home for the time being. I guess I feel like I am not "important enough" to take this issue to anyone that can specifically do something about it. I would contact the local DNR or police department. I would make sure that those organizations were taking it to higher ups, and following through with my concerns. --S

  6. Ingrid,

Your article sounds really interesting! I don't think many people think about invasive species that much since a lot of us cant even differentiate between what's foreign and what's native! As for your question, I would also contact the local DNR for more information. I think it would be wise to invest in a Center for Biological Invasion, but I think environmentalists and biologists will need to do a lot of persuading before seeing any invasion centers anytime soon!

  7. "invasive organisms are on the the largest threats to native species population and have caused more than 130 billion dollars a year in damage to the environment." Whaaat! that's crazy! Good job summarizing the chapter.. and I would have to agree with everyone when they said they would contact the local DNR for more information.
