Review: Inconvenient Truth

"This is not so much a political issue as it is a moral issue..."

ARE WE CAUSING GLOBAL WARMING...

"AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, which offers a passionate and inspirational look at one man's fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it." --www.climatecrisis.net

"WE ARE WITNESSING A COLLISION BETWEEN OURSELVES AND OUR EARTH"
  • Summary of the reviewed piece:
The video "An inconvenient Truth" was a very earth shaking film. (no pun intended) This film was a through review by Al Gore, of the effects that global warming has on our earth, lives, and futures. It showcases the situations that we are currently facing in the world because of global warming (i.e. extreme glacial melting, sever tropical storms, and increase average temperatures.)

It further continues to demonstrate situations we will be in if we continue to participate in the negatives behaviors that do not protect and serve the earth that we have but rather continue to abuse it.
As quoted from the website that goes along with the film, "Are we causing a global crisis?" A firm question with scientific evidence that places blame in the hands of the earths citizens and makes claims that we truly are causing our earth to melt. This being said the video proposes ideas for revising our current behaviors and suggests that this is a political matter as well as a moral issue.

Al Gore showed strong belief and represented his case and position on global warming very passionately in this film. He was very convincing that we must as a society work to combat global warming in a very intense manner.

  • List of new terms with definitions:
Global Warming - Global warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth's near - surface air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its projected continuation.

Kyoto Protocl - "The Kyoto Protocol is a protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC), an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development."

Polar Ice Caps -
A polar ice cap is a high-latitude region of a planet or natural satellite that is covered in ice.

Extinction - is the death of every member of a species or group of taxa.

Permafrost -
permafrost or permafrost soil is soil at or below the freezing point of water (0 °C or 32 °F) for two or more years

  • New concepts that challenged your thinking:
I honestly am not really quite sure where to start because the film as a whole really challenged my thinking in most areas. This video was a very reflective film for me personally. I saw strong political ties, although I understand how it may also be a moral issue. Considering global warming is still just speculation, it was extremely hard for me to not be totally convinced by the supporting evidence that was presented in this film.

Specifically, the thoughts that challenged my thinking:

  1. We had one of, if not the most catastrophic storms in the history of the U.S Hurricane Katrina, any correlation... what do you think? Stated in the film , "warmer oceans = stronger storms?"
  2. If we continue in the same direction we will literally drowned Florida and NYC, and various other parts of the world! !
  3. In the last 14 years the temperatures have been at all time highs.
  4. Currently, 279 species of plants and animals are already are feeling affects of global warming.
  5. The overall melting of glaciers, and the photos that were shown that depict this melting...shocking, scary, and really eye opening.
  6. The photos of the earth from a distance were really striking.
  7. Idea of "varnish on a table" related to the "atmosphere on the earth" --painted a great visually for me!
  8. India had a day the temperature 122 degrees F last summer.
  9. 200 cities and towns in the U.S. (specifically the west) set all time records for temperature/heat!
  10. "Make sure your facts are based on science"
  11. "Make sure you act to change."

1. We invite you to join us. The continued growth of We -- our goal is to have several million members early in 2009 -- will compel leaders to recognize the need to repower America.

2. We get organized to bring about the policy and political changes we need to to solve the climate crisis. Will you take responsibility for helping us get organized in your area? It may mean recruiting people to join you, hosting a meeting or event, organizing a training, and reporting back to us on how it went.

  7. Abbey,
I really liked how you outlined specific concepts from the movie that challenged your thinking. I felt that Gore did a great job of providing effective analogies of everyday things in relation to our environment (i.e. varnish on a table = atmosphere on the earth). Great job on your first review! :-)

  17. Hey Abbey!
Wow, what a great review, you added all the necessary details...
I think the quote "This is not so much a political issue as it is a moral issue" Is such a good and true statement!
Thanks for listing new terms and defining them! It makes the reading a lot easier to follow.
There were so many new concepts that challenged all of our thinking! You're right, where to start?? I never really thought about warmer oceans= stronger storms. It is such a sad truth! I like that you bulleted ways of making a change.
    Good work Ab!

  18. Abbey,

Nice post!! I like how you put your thoughts that were challenging together. I was really shockey how India had a high of 122 degrees F last summer. Living here in minnesota, I couldn't begin to imagine what that would feel like. Thanks for the great post.

  19. Abby! Way to address all the review topics expected for this review! I love how you added in some of those quotes from the video. Also, I can't believe that in the last 14 years the temperatures have been at all time highs! Crazy. Thanks for all the definitions and helpful links! You rock=)

  20. Abbey- your list of concepts/movie quotes that challenged your thinking lined up with mine. I got a great visual with the "varnish on the table" comment. It is helpful to picture our environment in ways that are on a much smaller scale, so we can fully comprehend exactly what damage we are causing. I also really enjoyed learning about how the temperatures have been so high in the past decade that it isn't just a "normal heat wave". To think that the citizens of India were in 122 degree heat!!! Are hot tubs even that warm!?? I feel like everything Gore said, I was believing as true. I agree with you, all of the facts and stats he was presenting made it really hard to think that global warming is still just an idea....
The website you provided was a great page to visit. It looks to me like WE is doing their part! --S

  22. Great review! I liked how you put down the thoughts that changed your thinking, those facts are really interesting. It just shows that we need to do something before the affects can't be reversed.

  23. Great Pic! You are right, global warming is more of a moral issue not political. I think if people focus less on the political side of it, it would make a great impact on how they think of it. I can see how you think this video was personal; i was very touched by Al Gore's work aswell.
    Great Post!!

  24. You have some very good suggestions on how to solve the issue of global warming. Contacting your state's politcal leaders is always a great idea. Especially if you can refer to research articles that will help you to push for this political change.

We do need to take our American power of having the right to vote, and to make sure onlye the right people for the job get into polictical power. That is the number one way we can get change going.
