WHAT DID I LEARN
Photo Essays:
I really enjoyed learning about the photo voice concept and I believe that this is can be a really effective way for people to share their thoughts and opinions! While spending time at AAPHERD this past week I can see also how this can be used as a documentation tool as well, taking photos and sharing them with higher management or committees about your work environment, or organization of a conference or event can be a way to clearly show how certain needs are being met effectively as well as showcasing how some are not. The concept as a whole I feel is really really great because it can give a voice and well as physical proof of this or that for people who are unable to share what they feel needs change!
Advocay:
Over the past two weeks we were taught about the concept of advocacy, and why we as health edcuators have the 7th responsiblity: advocate for health education. I understand know why we must push for certain topics when it comes to health, and that our voices are have the ablity to make a differece when we act professionally and learn to push for what is needed in health edcation. We also learned some pros and cons of how to advocate properally, avoid aggression and know your subject matter well were two points that I took away from our disscussion.
Political Representatives:
We were asked to review our local political representatives, it was interesting to me, and I honestly did not understand why, until we disscused advocacy why we were doing this! It was a good exercise for me because I just simply did not know many of the people we were asked to define, as politics is something that I really know little about!
What have I learned:
As a whole these past two weeks MAN o MAN in general have I learned a ton or what... attending AAPHERD I learned more then I ever imagined, and to be honest it was somewhat exhausting! I learned the concept of photovoice in more depth, I improved my networking skills, and really understand that spending time with people who are more educated than yourself can really help to motivate you to grow, learn, and push to be something better! It was a captivating experice for myself and something that I would encourage all health ed. students to do! I also have been workin on my photo essay and just asking people about the concept and what they can do to help pitch in, and spending time outside of our classroom evaluating people and different cities efforts to go green really really showcased how much I have learned in this class and how much I have really become environmentally aware! A VERY great learning experience!
Abbey- It is great that you learned so much over the last couple of weeks. I told Dr. V that i was jealous of her going to AAHPERD and the same goes to you!! I bet that you will never forget the experiences you had and you will be a better health educator because of it!
